The best one I’ve read is SAVE THE CAT. I really, really dislike Blake Snyder’s voice as a prose writer, but since he sadly and suddenly passed away this year, I won’t pile on with that opinion.**
And despite his tone - I found the book to be a fantastic breakdown of story beats/necessities. A lot of it is common sense - and it’s very focused on mainstream studio pictures (Snyder wrote Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot!), but he has a simple, useful approach to building your script.
**NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION: Try not to overly criticize the recently dead.
